Too often, body-positive movements are full of encouragement to “love your curves!” but leave out a crucial piece: recognizing, and dealing with, the very real trauma caused by fat oppression all around us. If you’re struggling with internal or external issues around your weight, this group offers a safe and inclusive space to unpack and process that trauma. With the guidance and support of a therapist experienced in body image issues and fat trauma, you will join a small, pre-screened group of peers each week for 8 weeks. Together, you’ll begin to build different relationships with your bodies, learn tools for coping with a hostile world, and work through the complex emotions you’re feeling around fatness.
This group is inclusive of all genders, sexual orientations, ages, and neurotypes, and is held in a physically accessible space. First and last sessions will be held in person at our Alexandria, VA office, with additional in-person flexibility around group preference, current COVID rates, etc. Sliding scale is available; please contact us to discuss it. Each session will focus on a different topic:
Week 1 (in person, Alexandria, VA): October 10th, intro and our relationships to our bodies
Week 2 (virtual): October 17th, body image and internalized fatphobia
Week 3 (virtual): October 24th, medical trauma
Week 4 (virtual): October 31st, travel and being out in public
Week 5 (virtual): November 7th, families
Week 6 (virtual): November 14th, holidays
(off for Thanksgiving)
Week 7 (virtual): November 28th, dating and sex
Week 8 (in person, Alexandria, VA): December 5th, wrap up
Consultation with AJ Cheyfitz is required to join the group. Please reach out as early as possible to schedule yours.
